The Perth Mint opened its doors on 20 June 1899 to support Western Australia's gold industry.

One hundred and twenty five years later, it is Australia’s only fully operating ‘gold rush’ mint and has evolved to become a formidable player in what is today, a global gold coin market.

The Perth Mint made history in 2011 when it produced the largest coin in the world, one tonne of 99.99 pure gold crafted into currency, featuring a design of the flying kangaroo and with a one million dollar face value.

It was a one-off. The mintage was 1.

The Perth Mint had unknowingly made history more than a century earlier when it minted this 1899 Half Sovereign.

It too was a one-off. The mintage was also 1.

No examples of the 1899 Half Sovereign, circulating, proof or specimen, are held in institutions worldwide, including the Perth Mint. This is the only known example and it is held in the private sector.

And while the 2011 gold coin defines the Perth Mint's modern aspirations, this 1899 Half Sovereign is historic and defines its beginnings, the year of its opening.

In 2017, the Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin was described as 'the jewel at the heart of the Perth Mint's world-class exhibition'.

This coin, as the Perth Mint's first half sovereign survives today more than a century later, in a brilliant untouched state. The only known example, it is unequivocally, 'the jewel at the heart of the Perth Mint'.

This colonial creation is celebrated because it is the only coin struck from the 1899 half sovereign dies.

The dies for the 1899 Sovereign and 1899 Half Sovereign were prepared at the Royal Mint London, the 'P' for 'Perth' mint mark shown above the date.

While the Perth Mint issued 691,000 circulating sovereigns in 1899, the year of its opening, the Mint did not issue any half sovereigns.

As we now know, one example was struck using the 1899 half sovereign dies. And it is this coin, minted as a Coin of Record to a specimen finish.

While the timing of the striking and its intended recipient is unknown, the coin has been authenticated by the Royal Mint London.

The industry became aware of its existence in the mid 1940s, veteran collector, Syd Hagley declaring ownership. The coin has subsequently been held by revered collectors Ross Pratley and Mel Gottlieb, of Madrid Collection fame.

The Perth Mint 1899 Half Sovereign is of national significance. The coin is fundamental to the Perth Mint's heritage, its first half sovereign.

Historic. Unique. And ultimately, irreplaceable.
